Tears in a Bottle
Hagar, after being sent away from the home of Abraham, was in the wilderness of Beersheba with her child. The water in her bottle was finished and she knew that her only child would now die from thirst. Not wanting to see him die, she moved away from him and cried bitterly.
But the great God of heaven loves His children and is concerned about every aspect of our lives. Whatever your challenges, remember that God is still in control and He holds up the worlds in His hands.
The Bible tells us that God heard the cries of the child, saw his empty water bottle, and knew the situation that they were in, and He intervened.
God spoke to Hagar and said, “Fear not” (Genesis 21:17). Those were powerful, comforting, and reassuring words coming from the Creator of the universe.
How often fear grips our hearts and we don’t know where to turn to; we don’t know where to find the solution to our problems. But today, the Bible assures us that there is hope in God. The same voice that spoke to Hagar in her desperate situation will speak to our hearts; the same God who comforted Hagar will comfort you in your time of need.
God promised Hagar that her child would become a great nation. Even in their hopeless situation, God opened a way; in their trials, He provided. The Bible tells us that God provided a well for her so that she could fill her water bottle and give the child to drink.
The water bottle that was empty implied hopelessness and death. It led to tears and anguish of heart. But God was able to work a miracle so that the empty bottle would be filled again, illustrating hope and life.
Do you know that our tears are never in vain? God is deeply concerned about our fears, our pains, and our heartaches. He is moved by our situation and longs to help us. When we cry, God listens and works in our favor. The Bible has these comforting words for us:
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” (Psalms 56:8).
Here we can clearly see the great love God has for us. God takes notice of our tears and He records the pain we endure; He hears our silent cries. Our tears are in His bottle showing His abundant love and care for us.
While Hagar and her child were crying because of the empty bottle, they were filling up God’s bottle with their tears. So too, when we are hurt by the trials of life and our “bottle” seems empty, God’s “bottle” is being filled up with our tears and He will work in wonderful ways to give us the strength and peace we need.
Dear Reader, whatever you are going through in life, please remember that God loves you and He cares for you and He can make a difference in your life. Just trust in His power as you cry out to Him. He will hear and He will bless you.
